Right about now, you’re probably wondering… but how can there be something about my own body that I don’t already know?  That’s a good question – how does knowledge get lost to the ages? Especially information, that at one point was common knowledge. Generally, over time wisdom is forgotten, purposely suppressed or certain aspects of the information, traditions for example, may be remembered but the reasons behind the traditions are forgotten.

In this case, the knowledge has been known for generations within Native American communities. Rastafarians regard dreadlocks as “high-tension wires” which transmits divine energy and inspiration from Jah or God the creator, to Rasta the mirror.  And there is also a tradition of sacred hair within the Sikh religion and with Kabbalism.

In the Kundalini Yoga tradition, which is a part of the Sikh belief system, hair has a purpose.  Did you know that hair is a conductor of the body’s electromagnetic energy? Did you know that the body has electromagnetic energy?  There are many people across the globe spanning colors, races, ethnicities, cultures and countries that all believe, hair is essentially an antenna. But an antenna for what, you might be asking.

We are all familiar with the electrocardiogram, or EKG and electroencephalograph or EEG tests, which measure the electromagnetic activity of the heart and brain, respectively. When electromagnetic activity ceases, life ceases. Electromagnetic energy controls our chemistry. Disruption of this energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, and if our cells are not healthy, our body is not healthy, in whole or in part.

An electromagnetic field affects the behavior of anything with charge in the vicinity of the field. Our bodies are electric, every heartbeat generates electromagnetic waves throughout the blood vessels of the body, stimulating tissues at a cellular level.

External magnetic fields and the normal electric and electromagnetic fields produced by the body interact. So, a magnetic field passing through our whole body will have an electromagnetic effect on each of our 70 trillion cells. As a result, magnetic fields act in basic and fundamental ways on molecules and tissues. They affect the most basic functions of all cells:  human, animal and plant included.

How Does The Human Body Make Electricity?

The nervous system is a network of cells called neurons, which transmit information in the form of electrical signals. In the brain alone there are around 100 billion and there is a similar amount in the nervous system tissues throughout the rest of the body.

Ever see how the antenna wire in an AM radio is coiled in a circle? That is a result of induction. Induction causes any conductor of electromagnetic energy to induce a current in adjacent conductors. This means that when you coil a conductor, the signal becomes much stronger. The hair on top of the head acts as an antennae. They conduct energy into the body. That’s right, your hair is antennae that is connected to your nervous system – which is the electrical system in your body.

Many problems with the body and mind can be attributed to blockages in the flow of energy or electromagnetic energy flowing through your body. Holistic therapies like acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, massage, Reiki and Emotional Freedom Tapping or EFT are based on this principal.

The skull is made up of tiny bones that are constantly moving even if only by micro millimeters and the degree to which they move impacts levels of calmness or anxiety. In Kundalini yoga, the head is covered during practice. Covering the head provides a sense of containment and focus while practicing yoga or while doing work that requires clarity of thought. It literally helps “keep your head together”.

This concept is the originating idea behind many religions preference for keeping the head covered to increase spirituality and increase a connection with God or the Universal Source.  Most religions forgot how or why the tradition started, and now use head coverings as a way to promote chastity among women.

The Body Is Amazing
The forehead consists of porous bone, which allows light to pass through it and stimulate the light sensitive pituitary gland. The pituitary is the master gland ,which regulates all other glands. If it is not stimulated by enough light, a lack of glandular secretion can result including the “feel-goods” dopamine, serotonin and melatonin. Therefore keeping this area of the forehead clear (having the hair up or not wearing bangs ) can help with these hormone levels. It bears repeating, the hair on all parts of our body is an extension of our sensitive field, an antenna or feeler.

So, to be clear, using heat, chemicals and dye on your is not good for you.  Covering your hair with extensions soaked in chemicals is also not ideal for you. But you already knew that.  What you probably didn’t realize was that it could potentially have an emotional, mental or spiritual effect on you as well. And in communities that consider hair sacred, cutting hair is seriously frowned upon.  However, is’t it  interesting that historically hair cutting was reserved for slaves, then prisoners and now our modern day military and law enforcement. Of course now, shorter hair is synonymous with a clean cut, professional image. What happens to a person emotionally, mentally and energetically when their hair is cut?

Hippie Chick: In the 60’s and 70’s, long hair was an expression of love, positivity, creativity and a connection to the universe.

When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in decreased sensitivity to your environment and a decrease in intuition, instinct and a dulling of the senses and perception.

The cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It can also be a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds.

In a practical way, cutting your hair cuts you off from who you really are, which is the purpose, for example in the military where the individual identity is transformed through enforced conformity and obeisance. In the past, when missionaries proselytized to indigenous groups, they forced them to cut their hair in order to better cut ties with their tribal traditions and past.  The cutting of hair is considered to be an effective way to end or transform modes of thinking, while disconnecting the person from their core self.

Cutting hair was deemed essential to disconnect Native Americans from their cultural, religious and spiritual backgrounds.

There is a reason why even the mainstream image of a soulful or spiritual person includes having long natural hair, whether it’s an Afro, dreads, curls or silky straight. Hippies from the 60s and 70s wore long hair to express their focus on love, peace and harmony. It’s because long, natural hair is a sign of spirituality, a connectedness to the environment and to oneself.

Kundalini Yoga

  1. According to Yogi Bajan, the creator of Kundalini yoga in North America, hair serves several specific functions for the human being:1. Maintains the body’s electromagnetic field, acting as antennae for the aura.2. Hair is typically abundant where major glands function (e.g. eyebrows, under arms), affecting hormones and the entire electromagnetic body health.3. A man’s beard covers the pranic nerve in the chin controlled by the moon. Without hair, the male nervous system cannot handle this energy, while the female’s can.4. Gathers phosphorous and vitamin D from the sun.

    5. Concentrates solar energy at the pineal gland when worn in a rishi knot at the top of the head.

    6. Note that wearing bangs over the forehead impedes the transmission of light to the pineal gland through the porous bones of the forehead.

    7. When kept uncut, the tremendous energy and materials used to build new protein-rich hair instead goes to the brain and other functions of the body.

    8. Uncut hair encourages rising of the Kundalini energy.

How to Care for Hair in the Kundalini Yoga Tradition

1. Combing with a wooden comb (or natural bristle brush) neutralizes the static electricity, distributes natural oils, and keeps the hairs untangled.

2. Combing the hair down calms and soothes. Combing the hair up energizes and invigorates. Use these effects to your advantage! Comb your hair if you need a pick-me-up or in order to relax.

3. Make a habit of combing your hair for 5 minutes morning and night.

4. Prior to showering, vigorously massage oil (almond oil recommended) into your hair and scalp. Wrap it with a thick cloth (so you don’t mess up your clothes). Let sit for an hour or two then wash your hair as usual. For an extra treat, mix yogurt and a fragrance in with the oil before massaging your hair.

5. Expose your hair, head, and skull to the sun at least once a week.

Have you noticed a difference in how you feel and interact with the world around you when your hair is in a natural state versus an unnatural state? How do you feel about yourself? How do you treat other people?

Regardless of whether you believe your hair has another purpose besides looking pretty and keeping your scalp warm, your hair is an extension of your body.  And the way you treat your hair will be reflected, in some form or fashion in your body.
